The betting exchange concept conceived in 2000 radically altered the gambling landscape.

Instead of simply betting on an event to win, there was also the possibility to bet on the losing outcome.

That is still traditional gambling in its basic sense but built into this new platform - of whch Betfair is the leading exponent - is the ability to trade.

Working on the same principle as a stock exchange, traders of sports events - football, horseracing, tennis, etc- can take one position on an outcome and later on during the event trade that position to secure a profit. Betfair uses the terms "back" & "lay"

Most of this site's content seeks to define and elaborate on the skills required to become a successful sports trader.
